Who hasn’t heard of Kylie Jenner, the teenage sensation? She is most widely known as an American reality television star starring in Keeping Up with the Kardashians, a reality television series focusing on the personal and professional lives of the Kardashian-Jenner family. She also began collaborating on a clothing line for PacSun, a retail clothing brand popular amongst the youth culture, along with her sister, Kendall jenner. Even more, she also plays an active part as a model and brand ambassador for Seventeen Magazine. No wonder she is tagged with the reputation of being an extremely influential teenager, as Time Magazine proves, for she was named one of the 25 Most Influential Teens Of 2014.
“Kylie Jenner…hosted red-carpet events, released clothing and nail polish lines and even published a dystopian young-adult novel this past summer.” (Time)
The younger generation love her, envy her, and most significantly, want to be her. It’s not surprising for them to want to copy the way she dresses, does her make up, or even her how she dyes her hair — which by the way, is of an amazing shade of turquoise-green.
But what if I told you Kylie Jenner’s lips started an entire movement among teenagers, completely sweeping social media? The movement titled the Kylie Jenner Lip Challenge, has become a viral sensation all over the internet. Kylie Jenner’s plump, fabulous lips have encouraged teenagers to swell their as well lips, blowing them up to worrying proportions (really dangerous, if you ask me). It’s quite simple. Those who did the challenge used a bottle or a small cup, and created a vacuum within the contain by completely sucking the air inside. As a result, they were able to achieve forcibly blown up lips, resulting in a rather funny looking face. This went popular all over Facebook, Twitter, and Vine, for the hilarity of the faces of successful participants of the Kylie Jenner Challenge.
This internet phenomena may seem harmless, and just simply entertaining. Sike, think again. There has been multiple incidents of bruises and soreness reported due to the challenge. As The Washington Post clarifies, there has been many incidents of serious injuries that require stitches to repair. Dendy Engelman, a dermatologic surgeon quotes, “Not only can significant pain, swelling and bruising result from these suction techniques, but there is potential risk for scarring and permanent disfigurement with repeated attempts”. It’s rather astonishing how teenagers even attempted this whole movement in the first place, because forcibly swelling your lips really can’t be something positive.
“I don’t even how the Kylie Jenner challenge even became a thing.” Grace Kim (’17)
It seems as though once again, our generation has crossed the border of ‘too much’, without even realizing. This seemingly harmless challenge has escalated to the extent of a losing of a life. Though this is not, by any means, 17 year old Kylie Jenner’s fault, it definitely makes us rethink our decisions of what to do and what we should do concerning our decisions and actions on social media. After all, we don’t want the phrase ‘died because of the #KylieJennerLipChallenge’ written on our gravestone.
Please, please, think twice before you mindlessly attempt a viral trend. And especially: don’t attempt this challenge!
